We’re back! It’s been a minute, but our region – and much of the world – is coming back to life. Here are some events in North Texas taking place this Independence Day weekend, all of them DARTable. (For a comprehensive list of DARTable Fourth of July events, follow the link at the bottom.) Remember to wear a mask on DART buses and trains!
Friday, July 2
Justin Russell Band brings its Texas brand of country music to Mama Tried at Toyota Music Factory. The venue is a short walk from Irving Convention Center Station on the Orange Line; the band hits the stage at 10 p.m.
ZimSculpt is an eye-popping collection of Zimbabwean stone sculptures on the lush grounds of the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden. The pieces – by contemporary artists from the southeastern African nation – are up to seven feet tall. There are more than 100 of them, and they’re all available for purchase. You can get to the Arboretum on Bus Route 60, which departs from EBJ Union Station; get off at Garland Road and Lakeland Drive. The exhibit runs through Aug. 8.
The Science of Guinness World Records is a mesmerizing exhibit at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science. Whether it’s the most drumbeats per second or the most pinky pull-ups (that’s a thing, apparently), the exhibit delves into the science behind these amazing, and sometimes bizarre, achievements. The Perot Museum is a short walk from Akard Station on all four DART Rail lines. You can catch the exhibit through Sept. 6.
Saturday July 3
Area farmers’ markets are getting back into the swing of things, and there are a couple of notable ones you can check out today:
The Richardson Farmers Market is a community-focused event where you can peruse local produce, honey, and the like, as well as artisanal breads and jams and a host of other cool stuff. The market starts at 10 a.m. at 101 S. Coit Road; you can get there on Bus Route 451, which runs between the Northwest Plano Park & Ride and Forest Lane Station on the Red and Orange lines.
The Deep Ellum Outdoor Market is a weekly event that features products from more than 40 artists and vendors as well as live music and unique performances by creatives from all over the city. This being Independence Day weekend, there’s even a special Mimosa Walk. It all takes place at noon at the corner of Crowdus and Elm – that’s a few short blocks from the Green Line’s Baylor University Medical Center Station.
Shop Small Saturday is back in Carrollton. With all we’ve been through over the past year-plus, there couldn’t be a better time to support the quaint, local businesses that line the streets of Downtown Carrollton. The event goes on from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. The neighborhood lies just south of Downtown Carrollton Station on the Green Line.
The 4th of July Weekend in Denton features bull riding, rock climbing, food trucks, games, face painting, pony rides, a petting zoo, caricature artists, and the Yankee Doodle Parade, which begins at 9 a.m. in the downtown square and ends at the Denton Civic Center. The whole area is easily walkable from Downtown Denton Transit Center, the terminus of Denton County Transportation Authority’s A-train. You can transfer to the commuter line at Trinity Mills Station on DART’s Green Line.
Red, White, and Groove takes place both today (July 3) and tomorrow (July 4) in the AT&T Discovery District. There will be live music by Ishi, Tess Vockler, and many more, as well as other entertainment and an immersive Fourth of July light show. The fun begins at 6 p.m. on Saturday and 8:45 p.m. Sunday, and it all happens near the corner of Commerce and Akard, three blocks from Akard Station on all four DART Rail lines.
