The holiday season officially arrives this weekend, and there’s plenty of DARTable fun after the feast. Before it, too: for many, it wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without the Dallas YMCA Turkey Trot, a holiday tradition more than 50 years in the making. Starting in front of Dallas City Hall, the event features certified 5K and 8-mile races in a family-friendly environment.

With such a big even taking place, DART has added service on both the Red and Blue lines. Take either to EBJ Union Station or Akard Station. City Hall is about a 10-minute walk from both. Registration begins at 7 a.m., and the main races start at 9 a.m.

After you awaken from your food coma, the (hopefully four-day) weekend is just getting started. Check out these DARTable events.

Friday, Nov. 26*

Hamilton blends hip-hop, jazz, R&B and conventional showtunes to tell the story of America’s first secretary of the treasury. In the process, the blockbuster musical tells the story of America itself. Catch it through Dec. 5 at the Music Hall at Fair Park. Get there by taking the Green Line to Fair Park Station.

Saturday, Nov. 27

The first big shopping weekend of the holiday season would be a great time to show your support for local businesses. You’ve got a few DARTable options to support our local communities:

  • Small Business Weekend in Downtown Plano happens all weekend long. Check out the local boutiques, restaurants and coffeehouses of this vibrant district right next to the Red Line’s Downtown Plano Station.

  • “Downtown Garland for Christmas” is the theme of that city’s Shop Small Saturday event. The district has 25 participating businesses, and when you shop at any of them, you’ll get a complimentary ornament. Take the Blue Line to Downtown Garland Station to get there.

  • Shop Small Saturday in Rowlett is a great way to support local business. Plus, the event features something called Row-Opoly – a kind of hybrid of the classic board game and a scavenger hunt. Support small businesses and win cash prizes in the Village of Rowlett Downtown, just a short walk from Downtown Rowlett Station on the Blue Line.
  • Shop Small Saturday in Carrollton is an opportunity to shop local and peruse an abundance of mom-and-pop shops. Historic Downtown Carrolton is just a short walk from Downtown Carrollton Station on the Green Line.

Elf is the latest (and seasonally appropriate) installation of the free CityLine Movie Nights series. The plot is familiar to many: Buddy (Will Ferrell) was raised among Santa’s elves, although he’s not one himself. He locates his real father in New York, and comical hijinks ensue. Grab a picnic blanket and take the Red Line to CityLine/Bush Station. CityLine Plaza is nearby.

Sunday, Nov 28

A Tuna Christmas  is Garland Civic Theatre’s presentation of the sequel to the perennially popular Greater Tuna. Like its predecessor, it’s a comical trip to the third-smallest town in Texas, and the colorful characters who inhabit it. Sunday is the production’s last performance at the Plaza Theatre, a short walk from the Blue Line’s Downtown Garland Station.

* Please note that DART will operate on a special schedule on Thursday, Nov. 25 and Friday, Nov. 26.
